What is FreeBSD?

FreeBSD is an operating system used to power modern servers, desktops, and embedded platforms. A large community has continually developed it for more than thirty years. Its advanced networking, security, and storage features have made FreeBSD the platform of choice for many of the busiest web sites and most pervasive embedded networking and storage devices.

Network enhancements: FreeBSD 13.3 boosts networking with improved performance, security, and features, including TLS enhancements, QoS support, and a rewritten routing stack. Shell Optimization: FreeBSD 14 switches to “sh” as the default root shell, optimizing interactive functions. This update brings a host of new functions aimed at enhancing the user experience.
Hardware support: FreeBSD 13.3 expands hardware compatibility with drivers for Intel I225 Ethernet controllers, updates for network interface management, and support for Intel Alder Lake CPUs. Email Management: dma replaces sendmail, simplifying MTA setup for efficient email management. This change streamlines MTA configuration through mailer.conf, offering users a more modern and efficient email management experience.
Storage and virtualization: FreeBSD 13.3 improves storage with network QoS and OpenZFS migration, while enhancing virtualization with increased vCPU support and improved interaction in Bhyve. Virtualization Enhancement: “fwget” utility simplifies firmware installation, while KTLS and FIRECRACKER enhance virtualization capabilities.
